An Urgent Call
End the Nuclear Danger

The Urgent Call states that even after a decade after the end of the Cold War, the peril of nuclear destruction is mounting. The great powers have minimally reduced their arsenals, the United States is talking about building more of them and even discusses using them preemptively and terrorists are trying to acquire them.

The Urgent Call offers several steps that could be taken including:

  • Renouncing the first use of nuclear weapons
  • Permanently ending the development, testing and production of warheads.
  • Strengthening nonproliferation efforts
  • Taking nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert
  • Initiating talks on further nuclear cuts.

The religious version that has been prepared by the Churches' Center for Theology and Public Policy states in part, "Contemplating the use of nuclear weapons is an affront to God. Preparing to unleash such destructiveness runs against all the life-giving creativity that comes from God. As people of faith, we affirm life and all that nurtures it. We abhor nuclear weapons and the destruction they portend. As people of faith we choose life."

Congregations, judicatories, ecumenical agencies and individual people of faith are urged to endorse it. People and religious institutions can read it and endorse it online.
