
Editor, Episcopal Life MediaDate Posted: 2/1/2008Closing Date: 3/28/2008 Job DescriptionEpiscopal Life Media -- an integrated system of web, print and broadcast communication resources serving Episcopalians, seekers and observers -- seeks an editor to plan and shape content across print and online platforms, and to produce the Episcopal Life monthly newspaper. The mission of Episcopal Life Media is to inform, inspire and involve the people of God by reporting accurately and fairly events and issues in the Church; welcoming a healthy exchange of ideas and opinions; nurturing the ministry to which our baptism calls us.This position reports to the Director of Communication with accountability to the Presiding Bishop and the Episcopal Church Center’s Executive Oversight Group. The Editor also works in consultation with Episcopal Life Media’s advisory Board of Governors. The Editor is called upon to build and maintain a strong rapport with readers and the diocesan and parish printing partners. This position is responsible for assuring that all Episcopal Life Media content reflects the mission, beliefs, practices, ethos and policies of the Episcopal Church, its constitution and canons, and the actions and resolutions of its General Convention. The position is also responsible for assuring strong “convergence” and cross-marketing of content with Episcopal Life Online, Episcopal Life Daily, Episcopal Life Weekly, Episcopal Life monthly newspaper, Episcopal Life Focus video/multicast and other Episcopal Life Media publications and products. Job RequirementsEssential responsibilities: provide excellent copy editing, headline writing, news reporting, feature writing and page design/content packaging; assure fair/balanced and accurate reporting of news and feature topics; assure coverage that is “culturally competent”, reflecting a diversity of ethnicities and full equity in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, age and physical ability; prepare and circulate story lists and coverage budgets/manifests for each issue; assure excellent photography within each issue; ensure all Episcopal Life Media editorial functions operate on deadline; oversees and assigns work of section editors, designated correspondents and contract writers and other editorial staff assigned to Episcopal Life Media; collaborate effectively with all staff (section editors and writers) as well as advertising manager, general manager, operations director and the Director of Communication; complete other projects as assigned by the Director of Communication.Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred; minimum of 5 years experience editing a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly publication; superior written, verbal, copy editing and content/page design skills; commitment to the editorial policies of Episcopal Life Media; thorough knowledge of the Episcopal Church, its polity and its relationship within the Anglican Communion and the wider Christian community; proven “people skills” and ability to effectively interface and collaborate with diverse constituencies as well as colleagues in the Episcopal Church and beyond; knowledge of online applications are essential; knowledge of Spanish or other foreign language is helpful.
