Jubilee Ministry
An Organizing Principle for understanding and interpreting Christian Ministry.

The Rev. Christopher Johnson
cjohnson@episcopalchurch.org

The mission of Jubilee Ministry is:
To make a direct and dynamic link between our theology and our ethics - said another way - the talk of our faith and the walk of our faith.

As Christians we do this by

-- calling the church to live out its prophetic vision of empowering local people to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with their god" (Micah 6:8)

-- responding to the Gospel's call to "feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the imprisoned" (Matthew 25:35)

Local Churches Feeling Financial Crunch
It makes sense that churches are starting to feel the sting from a slumping economy and the Wall Street meltdown. Often churches are where people show up for help. And at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bethlehem more people have been showing up at the church's soup kitchen. The church's Soup Kitchen Coordinator Liz Miller says the church has served almost 1,500 more meals for this year through September than during the same period in 2007.

Seeking Jubilation in Wyoming
Wyoming Episcopalians ARE living out the gospel command to feed the hungry and care for the oppressed. Trouble is, most congregations are so physically distant from one another, it’s hard to establish a sense of community, let alone build a network of supportive ministries. But that’s exactly what Mary Ellen Honsaker, the Jubilee Officer for the Diocese of Wyoming, is intent on doing.

Going deeper
(September 15, 2008) St. Timothy's Church in Iola, Kansas, might be small, but it's really cooking up a storm. Parishioners' efforts to provide food -- and lots of it -- for people in their southeast Kansas town have earned them a nickname. "We're known as the church that feeds people," said the Rev. Jan Chubb, vicar. The church, with 40 baptized members and an average Sunday attendance of about 26, for four years has used monthly community dinners to raise money for outreach

Summer Reading Camps
It’s not likely that one week at a summer camp and a small $1,500 investment is going to change a child’s life and set that child on the road that leads to economic self-sufficiency instead of poverty. But then, it’s not likely that a mustard seed will ever amount to much either. Or is it?

Sharing songs -- and life
(June 16, 2008) Two seemingly different groups in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, recently began building relationships with the help of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The first is the children who live with parents or guardians at the St. Vincent de Paul Transitional Housing Center in Coeur d'Alene. Each Monday evening, a small group of St. Luke's volunteers works with the children while their parents and guardian attend classes aimed at providing the necessary skills
