Job Description

The Center for Evangelism and Congregational Life (ECL) groups together those activities that support dioceses, organizations and congregations to strengthen congregational vitality and effect spiritual transformation. ECL ministry areas include Christian Formation, Congregational Vitality (including Stewardship and Research), Evangelism, Ethnic Ministries, Episcopal Migration Ministries, and Worship and Spirituality. . Although the ministries are diverse, the unifying purpose is to further God’s mission by serving and equipping the people of the Episcopal Church.

ECL is looking for a Associate Program Officer: Multicultural Ministry and Evangelism.  This position is based in Seattle, WA and travel is estimated at 25%-50%. Estimated start date is Fall, 2008.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • With in the Center, the Associate Program Officer focusing on Multicultural Ministry and Evangelism will work closely with existing ECL colleagues (including the Asian American, Latino/Hispanic, Black, Evangelism and Congregational Vitality Officers, as well as the Native American Officer in the Advocacy Center,) with the responsibility of serving and equipping Episcopal dioceses and congregations as they seek to enhance multicultural ministry and proclaim Jesus’ message of reconciling love.
  • The position includes the development of resources, creating content to be uploaded to  web sites, planning and implementing trainings and conferences, and speaking at Diocesan and Provincial events.
  • Building collaborative working relationships with existing networks, groups, organizations, committees of General Convention and institutions currently focusing on multicultural ministry and evangelism, plus facilitating the formation of new networks where needed are priorities.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS

Essential Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and theological education/training (advanced degree preferred)--ordination not necessary
  • Thorough knowledge of the Episcopal Church
  • Knowledge and/or practical experience in multicultural ministry, including  multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-racial congregational development theory.
  • A heartfelt understanding of evangelism and the ability to articulate that understanding, especially as it relates to multicultural contexts.
  • Willingness/ability to preach at worship services when requested
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues with in the Episcopal Church Center, the ECL Center and across Christian denominations
  • Effective written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literacy

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Experience in transforming congregations from mono- to multi-cultural.
  • Program development
  • Bilingual Spanish-English preferred but not mandatory

Salary
